Southern California has become a blazing inferno, looking like an apocalypse, with several simultaneous fires burning out of control.  The monetary damage is estimated to be over 2 Billion U.S. dollars, and growing by the hour.

So far, 522,000 acres have burned (the news said that would be comparable to 815 square miles), 1552 homes have been burned down to the ground, 30,000 more homes are possibly threatened, and 15 people have died, along with pets/animals, and all this devastation has been attributed to arson, the fires intentionally set by human hands.

The flames keep changing direction, due to the high winds, making it almost impossible to keep the fires under control.  Fire fighters fear that some of the fires will eventually end up merging into one massive fire.

I watch the news with such sadness. ):

In Australia and here about this on the news and no doubt its posted all over every other (world or otherwise) news TV and web sites, Point is why is it posted on a "Art" site ?

You have software news, fair enough because you can skin software, dunno about skinning this tho.

No flame.
there is no faq on what you can type for each.
the poster never called it art, its just a short self typed news article as you can see a lot of devis are in cali now, so i guess maybe this fire effects their art work, or maybe a friend of the devi is worried about them and its effecting them.

if someone wanted an article on art they can post about a museums they've been too, or what recently happened in new york (the nude art photography).

What's truly disgusting, id that $110,000,000 of funding to help out in california was tied to the $87billion dollar iraqi funding bill. This political manuvering truly sickens me.

I'm still praying for rain and for everybody's safety and well-being. At least it appears to be getting under control...

Oh, and I was under the impression that the Ramona fire was started by a lost hunter who sent up a signal flare - not arson. Still, it was rather stupid of him...

*gets back to praying*

There is a more immediate concern that should be addressed here: MORE displaced Californians driving like assholes in YOUR states! Help them! Send money! Spit! Urinate! BUT KEEP THEM THERE!

I've seen the fires fist hand, and I have had to help people evactuate their homes, sad, sad buisness in california...

Worst part is, we may lose several important california landmarks, like big bear and I think julian is already gone.

Well, watching the news to keep up with what's going on is one thing..... watching the news to see how close to home these fires are coming is another entirely.... Smoke has completely enveloped where i live. It's so thick that it's almost impossible to see 100 feet infront of you! My highschool has been shut down for the rest of this week, and possibly longer if conditions don't clear up! As the fires reach hysperia, every one where I live is beginning to wonder, just how much longer it will be before they reach us!......

And for those of you, who are wondering why the fires in CA have been posted and not the ones from other countries, it's because some one wanted to talk about it, and some one felt it was important. If you wanted to talk about the fires about that raged in British Coumbia, then you should have posted something about it! Nothing gets done if you sit around and wait for others do it for you! If you want something known, then make it known!!! I didn't even know there were fires in British columbia, for Christ's sake! Complaining about what is being discussed and what's not being discussed is almost as childish as crying to mommy about why your friend got a new toy and you didn't! If you're not mature enough to know that if you don't want to talk about something to leave, then you need to open your eyes to real world. And correct me if I'm mistaken, but the heading above these post on the hompage of DA says one word 'News.' That doesn't specify what type of News has to discussed here, so does it matter that some one thought it was important that the CA fires were important enough to discuss them here, and yet no seemed to want to discuss the Columbia fires? So if any one is offended that some one started a news discussion on the CA fires and not the Columbia fires, I ask you all this: Why didn't YOU start a news discussion on the columbia fires?

For God;s sake, let people post whatever the fuck they want. U don't give a damn about the post...hey...don't fucking read it. I NEVER read the forums or anything, but some people do. At Da, we post what's important to US. Some of the artwork that we post may be important for us....but you might not even get one fucking view. It's the same thing. Quit ur bitching, and let them say wha tthey feel they have to say. Besides, support is just as helpful as anything else.

And don't go on about DA is about art and only art. Let's see what you'd have to say if your fucking house was burning down.

(LOL, I didn't even know this shit was happening, but i'm interested. See, seems this post DOES have a uselfulness.)

first of all ONE of the 5 fires was started by the hunter... at least one of the other was for sure arson....

heres a little excerpt from an article in usa today:

PHOENIX (AP) The FBI alerted law enforcement agencies last month that an al-Qaeda terrorist now in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States. Rose Davis, a spokeswoman for the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, told The Associated Press that officials there took note of the warning but didn't see a need to act further on it...

by the way... the al qaeda detainee made his statement on june 25th (source: www.debka.com)

I ache for my native state =( Not only for the people but also for all the wildlife and nature that is suffering/dying.

I have read that authorities suspect arson in at least four wildfires in San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Ventura counties. I hope the people who started these fires are caught and given a harsh sentence! Hell-- if I had my way I would love to see them burned alive....seems a fitting punishment for the horrible thing they did!

there was actually a fire here in burbank last week.
we were very fortunate that the fire fighters had it under control in a matter of hours.
thanks to the helping hand from neighboring communities they saved dozens of homes from going up in flame.

Come to California! Our current seasons are Hot, Getting Hotter, Too Hot to Live, and Hotter Than Hell. Be sure to pack your sunscreen and VOC mask, because we supply MSDS on air! As you may see from your handy dandy California tour video, the hills are burning! Be sure to take home your souvenier pile of ash that was once a rare and possibly extinct tree home today! Your friends and family will be wowed! Thank you for visiting Caly-fornia, the United State of Ah-Nuld Grope-inator.

couple of years ago my house nearly burnt down during a really bad summer. i feel for all those who have lost their homes, and those who fear losing their homes!!
bushfires are a scary thing!!
all those wishing for rain-- its gonna take more than a little rain.. you'd need a massive downpour to put out fires that large!!

i'm really terrified whats going to happen this summer down in Australia. we've had the worst drought. things are going to get ugly!!

The other morning i woke up and I thought it was snowing, but no, it was about 80 degrees, i realized it was ash. The sun gave off red light over the weekend, like i was living on mars - very strange. I live about 30-45 minutes south of the san bernadino fires, and still wanted to stay inside all day because the outside world smelled like it was burning down.... very screwed up, the santa ana winds are due to pick up too, they do every halloween...

Perhaps it has nothing to do with the DA-art community but like other disasters those people need to be noticed.
