BAM, Iran (Reuters)

"Entire blocks of buildings lay crushed and survivors lined up blanket-wrapped bodies in the street after a devastating 6.5 earthquake leveled nearly three-quarters of the Iranian city of Bam on Friday."

According to local authorities (latest report), they fear the death toll could reach up to 20,000 people, or more, and say that it has already claimed almost 12,000 lives, and injured over 30,000 people.  The figures are expected to grow, due to the fact that many people are buried under the rubble.

Rescue operations continue to be slow going, due to darkness.  ''The disaster is far too huge for us to meet all of our needs,'' President Mohammad Khatami said. ''However, all the institutions have been mobilized.''

U.S. President Bush, along with leaders of other nations, offered to send whatever help Iran might need during this devastating time.

A famous 2,000 year-old and historical fortress that was overlooking the city, has suffered major damage, many towers and walls crumbled, some still remain, but are barely standing.

My thoughts/prayers go out to the members of DeviantArt who have been personally affected by this tragedy.  Let's all show our caring and support to them, and to all the victims and their families of this terrible tragedy.

Why doesn't the U.S. Navy help? They have enough troops positioned outside of Iran to offer substantial aid.
